Orthopedic surgeon
Georgios Ikonomidis is an orthopedic surgeon who has been working in the orthopedic department of the SAINT LUKE Clinic in Thessaloniki since 1996. He studied at the Medical School of the University of Perugia (Università degli Studi di Perugia) in Italy, graduating in 1987. From 1988 to 1990, he worked as a rural doctor in Petrus, Drama. Following this, he began his specialization in orthopedics, initially training (1990-1991) at the 4th University Clinic of Georgios Papanikolaou Hospital in Thessaloniki under the supervision of Prof. Ioannis Dadoukis, and then at the Orthopedic University Clinic of the same hospital under the supervision of Prof. Panagiotis Symeonidis from 1991 to 1995. After completing his degree in Orthopedics, he was selected to study under the Georgios Hartofilikidis Fellowship at the Orthopedic Sports Injury Clinic of the Athens Medical Center (K.E.H.C.T). Since 1996, he has also operated a private practice. From 1996 to 2008, Dr. Ikonomidis served as the official physician of PAE – PAOK. Additionally, from 2008 to 2013, he was the official doctor of the Cyprus national football team, and in 2013, he returned to PAE – PAOK as an official doctor. From 2018 to 2019, he held the position of official doctor of the Greek national football team.
Furthermore, Dr. Ikonomidis has worked in various foreign clinics, some of which are major scientific centers around the world, led by pioneers in promoting new surgical techniques. Notable among these are the orthopedics of Di Giacomo, Campagna, Taverna, Bariberi, and Bianchi. Dr. Ikonomidis actively attends and participates in various conferences with practical training, and he places great importance on staying informed about all medical innovations. He is a member of the Greek Society of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology, as well as the Society of Orthopedic Traumatologists of Macedonia – Thrace.
His medical practice involves a significant number of operations related to sports injuries of top-level athletes, including those of national teams. Professional athletes from various sports have entrusted him with their rehabilitation, even in particularly challenging cases, and all have successfully returned to their previous competitive level. Numerous operations, both arthroscopic and otherwise, have been performed with complete success on the knee, shoulder, and hip joints.
Additionally, for the past ten (10) years, Dr. Ikonomidis has been utilizing biological therapies such as PRP (platelet-rich plasma) and stem cell interventions using living tissue from the abdomen for both sports injuries and degenerative joint diseases.
