Ophthalmology

The Ophthalmology Department of St Luke’s hospital is one of the most advanced ophthalmology centers in Greece. The people of the department seek pioneering and innovation in the field of diagnostic and therapeutic ophthalmology and have the patient and his needs as the focus of their practice.
The Ophthalmology Department of St Luke’s deals with the entire range of eye and eyelid diseases, both at the outpatient and operating room level.
Philosophy of the department

The goal of the staff of the department is to preserve or improve the patient’s vision, following individualized means and practices. Thus we evaluate and treat the patient holistically, always prioritizing their particular needs and wishes.
Age range and diseases

In the department, diseases of infancy and childhood (e.g. myopia, hypermetropia, astigmatism, strabismus, blocked tear ducts) are treated, as well as diseases of adults and the elderly (e.g. cataracts, glaucoma, presbyopia, diabetic retinopathy, detachment).
Surgeries and modern ophthalmological procedures

All kinds of operations are performed in the hospital’s operating theaters with modern ultrasound and LASER machines, such as:
• Small incision cataract surgery
• Glaucoma surgery
• Retinal detachment surgery
• Vitrectomy.
Each operation is performed by an ophthalmologist specialized in the subject.
Modern equipment in the diagnostic and therapeutic field
Our equipment includes the best that modern technology has to offer, both in the diagnostic and therapeutic fields.
Diagnostic field and department equipment
• Optical coherence tomography (OCT). For examination of the fundus, macula and optic nerve
• Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A). Digital bloodless angiography
• Fluoroangiography, fundus photography, autofluorescence
• OCT of anterior cells. Cornea and iris
• IOL Master Biometrics. Laser use for accuracy in the calculation of the intraocular lens in cataract surgery
• ECHO Biometrics. Use of ultrasound
• Corneal pachymetry. In glaucoma and other diseases
• Ultrasonic (at 15 Mhz). For A-ultrasound, B-ultrasound and combined A-B ultrasound
• Humphrey 745i electronic perimeter with sophisticated software
For diagnosis and monitoring of glaucoma, diseases of the optic nerve, macula and other fundus. Also, for neurological, neurosurgical and endocrinological diseases. Necessary for monitoring patients with rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus, or other conditions requiring long-term hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil).
Therapeutically, at the outpatient clinic level, the following are available:

• Argon Laser (532 nm). For retinal photocoagulation
• YAG Laser. For iridotomy and capsulotomy
• SLT Laser. For trabeculoplasty
Surgical treatment of all eye diseases
• Cataract, glaucoma, retinal detachment
• Epiocular membrane, macular hole, vitreous hemorrhage
• Complications of diabetic retinopathy or cataracts
• Diseases treated with corneal transplantation or with the use of amniotic membrane
• Age-related macular degeneration or diabetic macular edema
• Retinal vein occlusions
• Injuries of the bulb, eyelids, orbit
• Strabismus
• Obstruction of the nasolacrimal apparatus (ducts, sac), dacryocystitis
• Entropy and ectropion
• Ptosis, blepharospasm and eyelid deformities
• Cataract, pterygium, thyroid ophthalmopathy.
The cephalotripsy and vitrectomy (vitrectomy) machines are from the most reliable international companies. The same applies to intraocular lenses (IOLs), simple or premium (multifocal to correct presbyopia or to correct astigmatism).
